THE OPPORTUNITY The Senior Vice President, Chief Nurse Executive & Chair, Nursing will be joining the most established and high-quality comprehensive cancer center in the world as a key member of the MSKCC senior leadership team. This team is collectively dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure of cancer and associated diseases through programs of excellence in patient care, research, and education. Unique is the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary team building upon a well-established nursing practice that crosses 25 sites of care and spans the full continuum of care across both New York and New Jersey. In keeping with Dr. Thompson’s charge for “accelerated progress that calls for the highest level of expertise, compassion and commitment’; this individual will ensure the development and articulation of an evolving strategic vision for the practice of professional nursing in partnership with other institutional leaders. Healthcare worldwide was forced to reform rapidly over the past year. As part of the executive team, this is an opportunity to develop changes to practice and innovate in this comprehensive oncological setting. The pandemic has led to heightened awareness concerning the fragility of patients with cancer and how healthcare systems can protect them. In addition, inpatient and ambulatory care clinical practice changes were accelerated based on defining moments and copies strategies from clinical oncology nurses, advanced practitioners, nurse leaders and researchers. This executive will be stepping in to promote the willingness of leadership to engage all stakeholders in shared decision making to develop, implement, and support practice innovation and change. Thinking about the desired attributes of a Chief Nurse for this fast paced and complex environment and taking into account the published Nursing Leadership Competencies among the ONS, AONL, HLA, and NCHL, the following competency domains have been identified for Nurse Executives and include the following: Executive Leadership Skills, Complex Healthcare Systems Thinking, Interpersonal Effectiveness; Knowledge; Business Acumen; and Personal Mastery. PRIORITY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Executive Leadership Skills - Member of the hospital executive team, representing the professional practice nursing in the MSKCC corporate structure;
- Participates in the ongoing review of the organization's mission, strategic plan and operations, policies and procedures, and resource allocation;
- Advises the Chief Operating Officer and Physician-in-Chief on an individual basis and as a member of committees/councils/ad hoc task forces on hospital organizational structure, policy formulation, strategy, problem-solving, clinical program development, and other key MSKCC priorities;
- Develops an effective collaborative relationship with the Executive Vice President/Hospital Administrator;
- Serves on various community agency and governmental boards whose activities are health care related and may influence care delivery at MSK or whose activities are consistent with the mission of MSK. Encourages and supports nursing staff participation in community service.
Complex Healthcare Systems Thinking - Collaborates with organizational executives, senior and interdisciplinary leaders in the integration of care across the full continuum of care in the growing and complex academic medical setting;
- Serves as a colleague, resource, and mentor to other senior managers on specific departmental, divisional and/or system-wide programs;
- Participates in the development and implementation of effective and ongoing programs to monitor, evaluate, and improve the quality of care for patients and their families served throughout the MSKCC system;
- Strategically aligns and mentors nursing practice into a system-wide interprofessional and interdependent collaboration necessary for a standardized and consolidated model of care;
- Serves as a visionary and empowers nurses at all levels across the enterprise to participate in decisions that impact their work; fosters and rewards teamwork; and maintains a practice environment that inspires shared leadership, high levels of staff satisfaction and engagement.
Interpersonal Effectiveness - Accountable for establishing strong professional relationships with trustees, executive management team, the internal and external nursing community, as well as the internal and external related professional patient care services;
- Accountable for mutually establishing interdisciplinary working relationships with the Department Chairs, medical staff, and other clinical leaders across the full continuum of care;

Knowledge - Ongoing responsibilities for the nursing service strategic planning regarding vision, mission and strategic initiatives, finances, human resources, material resources, information resources, and performance improvement;
- Fosters an environment for statesmanship and scholarly, evidence-based nursing practice, education, and research;
- Participates in public speaking, publishing, and creating an environment for scholarly, professional nursing practice;
- Fosters innovative collaborative patient care models and recommends the implementation of best practices;
- Promotes nursing practice guided by the MSKCC Code of Conduct, the Patient's Bill of Rights, the American Nurses Association Standards for Nurse Administrators, and the Nursing Department's professional practice model (Relationship-Based Care) and care delivery model (primary nursing);
- Advocates for the pursuit, translation, and utilization of advanced knowledge in oncology nursing.
Business Acumen - Oversees the development and implementation of information systems to support the clinical practice and business functions of department;
- Develops system policies, implementation, analysis, and alignment with the regulatory guidance necessary to transform the clinical enterprise into an effective delivery system;
- Directs and evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of the performance of direct reports in implementing their duties and responsibilities;
- Ensures processes are in place to monitor personnel credentials, annual performance appraisal, competency review and adherence to mandatory programs;
- Responsible for the formation, approval, and monitoring of the nursing service budget.
