The SVP will join and lead an experienced, dynamic team at GHAI to support public health policy advocacy globally. The SVP should be a seasoned advocate who can oversee the overall operations of GHAI and, working with other members of the senior management team, ensure the successful design and implementation of public health advocacy programs to address various global public health issues.
GHAI was established as a special initiative of the Campaign. Having successfully worked to implement evidence-based strategies to reduce tobacco use and its deadly toll in the United States and around the world, the Campaign is using its public health advocacy experience to advance public health on a range of additional public health issues, including food nutrition and food policy, cardio-vascular health, injury prevention, and health systems strengthening and budget advocacy and accountability. Since its inception, GHAI has supported public health advocacy campaigns and achieved policy wins across dozens of countries on multiple issues.
The SVP will provide overall strategic leadership and work with other members of the GHAI senior management team to: design and launch new programs; ensure effective implementation of existing programs; and oversee the overall capacity building efforts across all GHAI programs. The SVP will work with the existing teams to create opportunities for cross-program planning and learning. S/he will also serve as a liaison between GHAI and the other components of the Campaign and work with GHAI’s marketing director and the Campaign’s development team to spearhead GHAI external visibility and business development efforts to raise the profile of GHAI in the global public health community and with potential new donors. The SVP will directly supervise the senior leadership team of GHAI and set strategic and operational direction to maintain and grow the existing portfolio of programs. This position is based in Washington, D.C. and is open to applicants who can permanently work in the United States.
New Program Development - The SVP will work with a core GHAI team to conceptualize, design, and launch new programs. As a part of the effort, the SVP works with the team to assess the political landscape, identify potential in-country partners, assess existing capacity, and determine best approaches to enhance capacity, and confirm opportunities for policy change in priority countries. The SVP leverages this analysis to structure the program and build the capacity of local partners to develop and implement effective policy campaigns on a variety of public health issues. The SVP will lead recruitment efforts for new programs to ensure project success. Where appropriate, the SVP collaborates with the Campaign’s country-focused tobacco teams and other working groups to efficiently and creatively craft and implement core advocacy strategies to achieve shared goals and initiatives.
Program Management and Capacity Building - The SVP will directly oversee multiple policy advocacy programs, supervising the project leads for GHAI’s programs. At present, these include three clusters: nutrition and food policy, injury prevention, and health systems strengthening and budget advocacy. The SVP will work with project leads to develop annual strategies and work plans for each program. The SVP oversees overall project monitoring and evaluation and is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely donor reporting.
In addition, the SVP will oversee the work of the GHAI Director of Capacity Building to provide guidance in the design, planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of all project activities. The SVP will be responsible for assessing and improving existing training curriculum, tools, and know-how provided to country-based partners to achieve agreed upon policy goals. Training and technical assistance will include strategic and action planning that integrates best practices in policy advocacy.
Marketing and Visibility - GHAI has grown very rapidly over the past several years. The SVP will oversee the overall outreach to the global public health community and potential new partners and donors. Working closely with the Director of Marketing and Visibility and coordinating with marketing plans of the other components of the Campaign, the SVP will implement a plan to raise the external profile of GHAI in the global public health space. This may include participation in key conferences and events, specific donor outreach, organization and hosting of webinars and other special meetings and events as well as the development of proposals and concepts to potential donors. The SVP will work with the GHAI Director of Communications to maintain the GHAI website and its relationship to and coordination with the Campaign website and social media properties.
The SVP will work with the Director of Marketing and Visibility to develop a business plan for growth of GHAI, including potential funders, estimated growth, and staffing models to accommodate growth.
Operations - The SVP will work with the rest of the GHAI Management Team to organize efforts to encourage sharing and cross-country learning both within GHAI and across the Campaign. S/he will serve as point person for the GHAI team with the Campaign’s VP for Finance and Administration and the VP for Human Resources on issues related to administration and personnel. S/he will oversee and assist with recruitment and onboarding of new staff and periodically organizing staff meetings, staff retreats, and other activities across all of the existing program teams. S/he will report to the Executive Vice President for Global Programs and work with the EVP on other special projects, as needed. S/he will be on the senior leadership team of the organization and represent the GHAI team on the Executive Committee.
