American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), 501(c)6, is the premier radiation oncology society in the world, with more than 10,000 members who are physicians, nurses, biologists, physicists, radiation therapists, dosimetrists and other health care professionals who specialize in treating patients with radiation therapies. These medical professionals, found at hospitals, free-standing cancer treatment centers and academic research facilities around the globe, make up the radiation therapy treatment teams that are critical in the fight against cancer. Together, these teams treat more than one million cancer patients each year in the United States alone.
As the leading organization in radiation oncology, the Society is dedicated to improving patient care through professional education and training, support for clinical practice and health policy standards, advancement of science and research, advocacy, and patient information resources. It also provides extensive online learning opportunities for its members.
ASTRO holds the largest Annual Meeting focused on radiation oncology in the world which attracts over 11,000 health care professionals in major cities throughout the United States. The meeting has an extensive exhibit hall showcasing the latest breakthroughs in cancer treatment. In addition, ASTRO sponsors three leading scientific journals, provides practice accreditation services, oversees a medical error reporting mechanism, conducts media relations, develops clinical guidelines to provide recommendations for care, funds grants to advance research in the field and has sophisticated advocacy and health policy operations.
ASTRO sponsors a website dedicated to patient education called RTAnswers (https://www.rtanswers.org/) which includes patient brochures focused on major diseases sites and videos so patients can understand how radiation therapy works. These activities are overseen by a team of dedicated staff and over 750 committee volunteers. ASTRO also oversees committees dedicated to radiation oncology department chairs, residency program directors, and residents.
ASTRO has a strong and positive staff culture. In its annual engagement survey most recently conducted in spring of 2023, 95% of staff said they would recommend working at ASTRO to a friend and the overall satisfaction rate is 93%.

The Radiation Oncology Institute (ROI)
Radiation therapy is used to treat more than one million cancer patients each year. Yet, funding for radiation oncology research is limited. Founded in 2006, the American Society for Radiation Oncology ROI is a 501(c)(3) charity that has funded $4.3 million in research to improve outcomes for cancer patients and drive the field of radiation oncology forward. ROI advances research and education so that patients with cancer can receive high-quality, innovative radiation treatment that enhances their quality of life and saves more lives. ROI has its own Board of Trustees, but there is overlap with the ASTRO Board.
ASTRO is seeking a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with overall responsibility for efficient and successful leadership and operation of the overall organization. They will partner with the Board of Directors to facilitate development of ASTRO’s strategic plan and annual operating plans and lead the staff to effectively advance and implement its goals and objectives. The CEO serves as a key representative, voice, and advocate for ASTRO with multiple diverse internal and external stakeholders. Further, they will ensure that the programs, activities, advocacy, and services of the organization provide significant value and relevancy for current and prospective members.
The CEO is responsible for managing nearly $25 million in annual revenue and 82 full-time employees. Through effective leadership and management, the CEO fosters high performance and growth consistent with ASTRO’s mission, vision, strategic plan, and values of the organization.
Specific responsibilities include the following:
Provide leadership in planning and implementing ASTRO’s mission and goals, developing strategies, proposing plans and budgets to achieve the goals, and setting standards and conditions for operating excellence.
Forge and maintain an effective, collaborative, and transparent working relationship with the Board of Directors. Engage Board members in communicating the status of the Society’s goals, finances, relevant governance issues, and resources.
Ensure appropriate translation of the Board’s strategic directives into operational goals and objectives by staff; provide input and direction to the Board on operational matters and issues, and development and implementation of the strategic plan.
Advise and assist the Board in the formulation of policies governing the organization and implementation of all policies and directives of the Board.
Update the Board regarding current operations and short-term plans for ASTRO. Inform the Board of innovative ideas, trends, and issues that may influence ASTRO’s success.
Facilitate consensus among Board members on key issues.
Serve as a principal liaison between the staff and the Board of Directors.
Administration and Operations:
Oversee all administrative, management, operations, and human resource functions.
Create, foster, and support a positive, proactive organizational environment of innovation, cooperation, and integrity, encouraging achievement of goals and objectives.
Develop, lead, attract, inspire, retain, and manage a diverse, talented, and high-performing team, to ensure that the mission and values of ASTRO are put into practice.
Maintain financial stability for ASTRO; develop a financial plan that supports a growth strategy focused on measurable outcomes such as: revenue, cost savings, quality improvements, customer retention and growth, and new product/program/service introductions.
Work with the Board and staff to develop plans to expand the program base, grow membership.
Identify, evaluate, and prioritize opportunities for international growth. Determine appropriate business strategy and assess resource requirements.
Demonstrate skill in influencing individuals and teams to perform at a high level and to embrace change. Negotiate persuasively to achieve a fair outcome or promote a common cause.
Manage complex constituencies and stakeholders, including the ability to effectively manage internal and external conflicts.

Ensure ongoing and new initiatives are carefully considered for alignment with the strategic plan.

Support the Board and key Committees to prioritize public policy priorities and engage members for grassroots support.
Provide strategic direction and oversight to advance ASTRO’s regulatory and legislative public policy priorities. Personally engage in key meetings with policymakers in collaboration with key ASTRO staff leaders.
Develop and implement a strategy for growing the PAC. Educate members on the importance of investing in the PAC.
Develop and implement a communications strategy to advance ASTRO’s public policy.
Engage external stakeholders with mutual interests to support the achievement of ASTRO’s public policy priorities.
Serve as a key representative and spokesperson for ASTRO to build its brand and public image.
Develop and maintain strategic professional organizational relationships.
Ensure strategic alignment of marketing, public relations, and communication efforts.
The CEO will be an executive-level leader with the professional experience and competencies to lead an innovative, complex organization in this dynamic healthcare environment. They will be an accomplished, strategic leader who will partner with the Board of Directors to advance ASTRO’s mission and vision and ensure the organization's effectiveness, growth, and relevancy. The CEO will have a successful record of accomplishment of cultivating and sustaining a culture of innovation and results and will possess a minimum of 10 years executive-level leadership experience with proven management, business, advocacy, financial, and technology acumen. They will have a deep understanding of and commitment to the challenges and opportunities that face the membership organizations, the profession, and its key stakeholders.
The ideal candidate for the CEO role will possess the following background, experience, and leadership competencies:
Passion for ASTRO’s mission and an ability to promote and communicate the philosophy, mission, and values of the organization to external and internal stakeholders.
Executive leadership in a nonprofit membership organization preferred.
