Vice President, Nursing, Children’s Health Service Line
Job Overview:
The Vice President of Nursing for the Children’s Health Service Line is a key executive leader responsible for shaping the future of pediatric nursing across the health system. This role sets the strategic direction for pediatric nursing care, ensuring the highest standards of clinical excellence, patient safety, and family-centered outcomes. With a focus on continuous improvement and innovation, the VP of Nursing drives system-wide initiatives enhancing the quality of care while achieving and maintaining national accreditations and elevating performance across all pediatric settings.
This executive leader fosters a culture of teamwork and excellence by developing and empowering interdisciplinary and cross-functional teams, promoting collaboration across departments and facilities. The position is instrumental in designing and implementing cutting-edge evidence-based models of care tailored to the unique needs of children and their families. As a champion for pediatric health, the VP ensures the delivery of compassionate and empathetic high-quality care, advancing the organizational goals and positions the system as a leader in children’s health.
Reports to:
The Vice President of Nursing for the Children’s Health Service Line reports directly to the Senior Vice President/Chief Pediatric Officer, RWJBarnabas Health, with a matrixed reporting relationship to the Executive Vice President/Chief Nursing Officer, RWJBarnabas Health.
Essential Functions:
Clinical Care Standards & Quality
Identify and articulate the strategic direction for the delivery of patient care by pediatric nursing across the health system.
Set pediatric-specific practice standards for nursing across the RWJBH enterprise and promote the use of evidence-based practice to support high quality nursing care consistent with best -in-class children’s hospitals.
Identify and implement innovative approaches to improve nursing practice and patient care/outcomes, including oversight for the nursing rollout of standard pediatric quality and safety programs and monitoring of performance and performance improvement efforts.
Create and foster an exceptional culture of care to include domains spanning quality, safety, experience, and equity across the CHSL.
Executive level partnership within all relevant service line governance structures and committees, including the Pediatric Quality Council and all related quality council sub-committees, goals, and objectives, e.g. roll out of SPS, NSQIP, development of quality score card.
Executive oversight of existing Pediatric Nursing Collaborative.
Education & Development
Oversee the prioritization and development of comprehensive system-wide educational programs for pediatric nursing.
Develop nurse fellowships in key areas of shortage or advanced skill.
Supports and facilitates the professional development of nurses through the identification of educational opportunities, mentorship, and leadership training.
Development of a program and process for nursing peer review.
Reputation
Improve national recognition of RWJBarnabas Health Children¿s nursing by enabling capacity of nurses to engage in scholarly and academic work as well as attend and present at professional organizations and conferences.
Facilitate progress around obtaining unit-based national accreditations such as Beacon, as well as specialty certifications for nursing.
Partnership with physician leaders and administrators in the development of action plans to close USNWR gaps and improve points and recognition.
Strategic Planning & Program Development
Provide nursing oversite to the development of the overarching strategic vision within the RWJBH system, developing best in class multidisciplinary programs which cut across disciplines of nursing, technical staff, APP and Physicians.
Engage in strategic planning process for nursing practice that aligns with the system and service line¿s overall mission and goals.
Partner with senior service line leadership team to advance goals and objectives of the service line.
Operationalize key strategic programs to fill system wide gaps.
Operations
Broadly participate in oversite of clinical operations, strategy and policy development at an executive level with other service line leaders.
Review and approval of annual site-specific nursing budget and capital submissions to ensure alignment across sites as well as alignment with system and service line policy and goals.
Develop recruitment and retention plans to ensure continuity and consistency of nursing talent across the system.

Qualifications:
Current NJ RN license
Master’s degree in nursing or related field required.
Doctoral degree preferred.
10+ years progressive nursing leadership experience in Pediatrics, including at the executive level.
Extensive experience in pediatrics across complex systems.
Demonstrated success in leading quality improvement, accreditation readiness, and cross-functional teams.
Strong knowledge of pediatric care standards, regulatory requirements, and patient safety principles.
Professionally active in nursing, pediatric and leadership associations.
Excellent interpersonal, communication and change management skills.
